Sandy's final 1973 list shows that a location was planned to open in Dekalb, Illinois. No address is shown and only the Sandy's Supervisor (District Manager) is listed. It is unclear as to if this location opened in time as a Sandy's but it was either one of the last Sandy's to ever open or it was one of the first Sandy's to open as a Hardees after the buy-out.
Sandy's fan Ed Rubeck has not only found the Sandy's Dekalb location, he provides a picture and address of this Sandy's which was located near Northern Illinois University students on busy Annie Gliddon Road!
Here's some info on the Sandy's that once operated in DeKalb, Illinois. It was located at the intersection of Annie Glidden Road and Hilcrest Ave. Today it is a liquor store BUT, from the outside, you can tell the style was that of the final Sandy's design.
Here is a pic from today! (the one of the liquor store)
I never knew it as a Sandy's, but I remember it when it was a Hardee's. I was born in 1972, and I remember as early as 1975 or 1976 that particular Hardee's was pretty much a weekly stop for my family each Friday night right before we would go grocery shopping. The town we lived in was about 13 miles away from Dekalb, but at the age of 3 years old, I was able to tell my dad which way to turn on each street to get there! He would ask me something like,"Ok, where do I turn?", and I was able to tell him which direction to go to get to Hardee's.
I remember one time we had to make a stop somewhere else before we went to eat, and my dad didn't make the required right turn onto Hillcrest Drive to get to Hardee's. Boy, did I throw a fit! I yelled, "you forgot to turn right, dad!" He reassured me we would go to Hardee's, but we just had to make one quick stop first. All was good!
Anyway, I hope everyone enjoys the photo. Keep up the good work, saving a little bit of history. You have a neat website. BTW, the address of the former Sandy's in Dekalb was 1039 W. Hillcrest Dr., Dekalb. I looked up the address of the liquor store that's there now in order to get it. I'll let you know if I find any more details on Sandy's at that location. - Sandy's fan Ed Rubeck, DeKalb, IL
As Ed stated, this is one of Sandy's last generation buildings! Great detective work Ed!
