Sandy's Kansas City, Kansas

Sandy's Kansas City, Kansas

02/17/2008 ... Sandy's fan Brett Lovett remembers Kansas City Sandy's! Kansas City had two known locations which appear to have opened back to back as they were Sandy's #253 and #254.

I am very happy to find your website. I have very vague memories of eating at Sandy's at 1304 Minnesota Avenue (Kansas City #2) as a small child. I actually was remembering it as "Cindy's" because I could remember the female persona (which also reminded me of Wendy's) and for some reason associated Sandy as being more male. However I definitely remember the location of the restaurant and that it became a Hardee's.

After finding your website I went to both listed Kansas City locations to get photos. Both locations are definitely former Hardee's buildings. I remember the Hardee's on Minnesota Avenue being either remodeled or rebuilt in the late 1970s, but I don't remember which. So I can't say with any certainty whether either of the Kansas City locations are completely new buildings, or if they might still contain any components of the original Sandy's buildings. I'm really hoping that someone will come up with some period photos of these Sandy's locations.

I was very disappointed to read about the demise of "Bucky's" in Lawrence, KS. I had just found out about it and was planning to visit since it's only about 50 miles from where I live. I guess I'll have to make the trek to Zandy's in Montana sometime to get the Sandy's experience!

Special thanks to Brett for the pictures! They are clearly Hardees buildings and the best way to know for sure if they are original Sandy's buildings is to check inside for the original Sandy's wooden beams which hold up the roof fins. If you see these then the Sandy's building is still there underneath!
